This course aims to develop and expand the student’s ability to read critically by studying various works of literature. Special emphasis will be placed on literary analysis, annotation, reading and writing skills, and vocabulary development.  The class will also provide strategies for understanding literature, regular vocabulary practice, regular grammar exercises, and tips for succeeding on the reading and English portions of the ACT.  We will use Format Writing by Frode Jensen as our guide for paragraph and essay writing.

Course Description:
Students will read selections from Shakespeare, O. Henry, James Hurst, Saki, Frank Stockton, Guy de Maupasant, Dr. Seuss, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., C.S. Lewis, and Homer. Writing responses and essay writing will relate to the readings; students will practice basic writing process steps and the MLA format, paragraph development, essay development with attached prewriting. Sentence structure and mechanics/grammar review will be addressed through the writing tasks. Literature will be viewed in the history and culture in which it was written.

Course Description:
This class is an introductory course in Illustrator and Photoshop, which is used in the industry of graphic design.  Students will learn typography, basic branding, t-shirt design and other elements of graphic design. We will go on field trips to see the different graphic design industries.  Students need to have a basic knowledge of computer language. Problems solving and thinking outside the box is important as well.  Drawing skills will help, but not required.
Requirements: 
PC or Mac is required due to the fact we will be using computer programs.

Course Description:

Chemistry - CLOSED (Waiting List)

Grade: High School *Pre-Requisite: Physical science or equivalent is recommended, Algebra I required, and Algebra II recommended
Fees: $40 per month per student, with a lab fee of about $40 per year for the use of equipment and lab supplies.

**The solution and tests book will not be required but would be helpful for parents to have in order to answer questions at home**
Course Description:
This class is an overview of chemistry, and will include studies of kinetics, the periodic table, chemical reactions, the nature of matter, sig figs, thermodynamics, stoichiometry, moles, enthalpy, entropy, etc.   It is a lab science course, and lab reports will be due about every month.  Students should expect to spend about an hour a day on this class every school day. Problems should be worked every week, and homework over each chapter is due every two weeks. Tests are every two chapters. 
*Required materials are a 3-ring binder to take notes in. Students should always bring their texts to class. A scientific calculator is also necessary; but a graphing calculator is better because it can be used for upper-level math courses as well. Students and parents are expected to check their emails at least twice a week.

Cold Cooking for Kids is a class designed to teach kids how to prepare healthy, nutritious and fun foods for themselves and for their families. We will be utilizing cold methods only, which greatly reduces the risks associated with independent meal preparation for kids. We will cover the basics of a healthy plate. Knife safety, ingredient choices, flavor, texture and presentation.  Students will learn to prepare healthy snacks, appetizers, main courses and desserts from scratch.

Cookie and Cake Decorating class is geared toward students with any experience level.  This introductory class will cover royal and buttercream icing, decorating supplies and tools, food handling safety and timing.  Students will decorate cookies, cupcakes and cake dummies.  For a final project, the class will create a cake and cookie set.
Proposed topics:  Food safety, ingredients and flavor, storage, longevity and safety, presentation, royal icing and much more!

Course Description:
If you have a high interest in writing, or wish to “tweak” skills to make academic writing more successful, or you simply have fun writing, this class might just be for you! The student will use the steps in the writing process to organize and develop ideas in essay perspectives, academic perspectives, creative writings, journal writing and real world presentation style. THE FOCUS OF THE CLASS WILL BE DECIDED BY THE DESIRE AND NEED OF THE STUDENTS. Class discussions related to writing styles, staying focused, relaxing as opposed to “overkill” and enjoying the journey of developing ideas with credible support are key elements with which we begin. Student writing may come from other classes in which a student is enrolled. If they wish, students may make selections from a suggested reading list as the year progresses. Course Description:             
This course is designed as a high school level biology lab class, and will cover the classification system for life, detailed study of various kingdoms, function and chemistry of cells, microscope and dissection technique, genetics, and a critical study of evolutionary theory. While the teacher and the text are critical of evolution as a theory of origins, we will approach the issue in an objective manner. While the teacher is a young earth creationist, all viewpoints based on logical, evidenced-based reasoning will be respected in class. 
On average, a student should spend about 5-10 hours or more per week in preparation for class.

Course Description:
Our goal in this class will be to attain an understanding of humanity through an examination of the various wars which have shaped the economic, political, religious, and philosophical influences of the present time. The focus of this class will include tactics, technology, economics, architecture, fortification, culture, and other topics relevant to the study of various tribes, states, nations, and empires which have existed from the time of the ancient Egyptians until now. We will examine a cross-section of all war periods from tribal to modern, and while our focus will be the Western world, we will also explore Eastern conflicts as appropriate. Another focus of the class will be projects designed as “living history”, i.e., learning about history by living some small part of it: baking bread by an ancient recipe, learning archery, paving a walkway, making Roman concrete, casting metal, flintknapping, building an earthenware oven, rough-hewing lumber and beams, and many other examples from the ancient and recent history world would be good examples of projects. Students may choose their own projects but must get them approved by the teacher.

We will be using Progeny Press curriculum, & possibly Total Language Plus curriculum.  Both of these are Christian-based literature curricula.
Most of the focus will be on literature, reading comprehension, & discussing the novels in class.  There will be weekly reading assignments, with questions to answer and vocabulary words from the stories. We will be going over various literature terminology and doing some writing.  Please be aware this is not a writing or grammar class. There is no textbook to buy. I’ll be doing bulk orders for the books ($2 to $4 each) that you can buy from me, or feel free to bring your own book if you have it already.  I will provide the worksheets each week for homework, so there is a copy fee.

Around the World in 180 Days

Course Description:
This class goes around the world and studies the political and physical geography of every continent. The goal of this class will be to learn the location of every country and a bit of the history of how it got there. Memorizing our states and capitals is a must! Lots of map work, but lots of fun, too. Foods and cultures will be part of the menu, also. The workbook gives lots of great questions and offers reading resource ideas. The student MUST have Internet access and freedom to search for answers online. The class will require 2-4 hours of homework per week.  Parents may want to expand on the class by giving extra reading to make it a history class, as well.

Upper Elementary Literature

Course Description: 
We will be using Progeny Press curriculum, & possibly Total Language Plus curriculum. Both of these are Christian-based literature curricula. Most of the focus will be on literature, reading comprehension, & discussing the novels in class. There will be weekly reading assignments, with some questions to answer and vocabulary words from the stories. We will be going over various literature terminology and genres as well as reading together in class. Please be aware this is not a writing or grammar class. There is no text book to buy. I’ll be doing bulk orders for the books ($2 to $5 each) that you can buy from me, or feel free to bring your own book if you have it already. I will provide the worksheets each week for homework, so there is a copy fee.

Course Description:

Alpha Student Pack will cover concepts such as place value, telling time, and mastering single digit addition.  Student will also learn skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.  Finally, the student will master relationships between addition and subtraction.
Beta Student Pack will cover concepts such as place value, as well as learning and understanding the difference between numbers and inequalities.  The student will also gain the ability to add and subtract any combination of whole numbers.
Science

Depending on enrollment, we will choose one of Dr. Jay Wile’s books Science in the Beginning, Science in the Ancient World, or Science in the Scientific Revolution. Course Description:
Cold Cooking for Kids is a class designed to teach kids how to prepare healthy, nutritious and fun foods for themselves and for their families. We will be utilizing cold methods only, which greatly reduces the risks associated with independent meal preparation for kids. We will cover the basics of a healthy plate. Knife safety, ingredient choices, flavor, texture and presentation. Students will learn to prepare healthy snacks, appetizers, main courses and desserts from scratch.
Second semester will be cookie and cake decorating.

Cookie and Cake Decorating class is geared toward students with any experience level.  This introductory class will cover royal and buttercream icing, decorating supplies and tools, food handling safety and timing.  Students will decorate cookies, cupcakes and cake dummies.  For a final project, the class will create a cake and cookie set.
Proposed topics:  Food safety, ingredients and flavor, storage, longevity and safety, presentation, royal icing and much more!

This class is for, but not limited to, students who learn differently.  This class will teach elementary age children to work as a team with their peers, to gain individual independence, and classroom/social etiquette.  Students will learn through group activities and occasional worksheets tailored to each child’s skill level.  Each week, reading, spelling, or social studies will be implemented in the lesson depending on the activity.

Students will study various groups of animals in detail, including but not limited to the ungulates, arthropods, bears, primates, rodents, reptiles, birds, and many other groups. Animal habitat, behavior, life cycles and interaction with ecosystems will also be a part of the course. Labs will be limited and focused on a few dissections, the odd microscope lab, studies of flight, and short videos and documentaries on the subject. Weekly homework, reading, and bi-weekly tests will constitute the workload for the class; students will likely need 3-5 hours per week outside of class in preparation and study.
